I'm watching this special on HGTV about eco-friendly materials for homes, looking for ideas, of course. So far they haven't really told me anything I didn't already know, but one of the designers said something when they were talking about living rooms. She said that being "green" with furniture is not new, because people have been using secondhand/family/heirloom furniture forever. Which means I've got a pretty darn "green" house, since just about every piece of furniture I own is a hand-me-down. The futon I bought in DC, but the mattress used to be on the futon in the basement back home. The media cabinet/stand was a printer stand. My endtable is one of the night stands that were in Grandpa's house. Two of the bookcases were from my bedroom back home. I think I got two of the others in college, and the third unit was a marked down display from when I used to work at The Container Store. My desk is the same stuff, although I did buy most of those pieces new (I think the desktop piece was a marked down return). The table was in one of the households' worth of stuff from Babcia's house. The coffee table was our coffee table when I was a kid. My dresser used to be in Rob's room. My mattress was also from Babcia's house, although the headboard and frame are new.
There are a couple things that got bought new like the kitchen chair, desk chair and my desk. Some of the storage drawers and things too. But most of it has been used in a previous habitat, and I imagine it'll get used in several future domiciles. Partly because I'm getting cheaper by the day and partly because it's nice stuff, it's going to hold up a good while. I'm certain I'll need more/new furniture at some point, but hand-me-down and second hand stuff is probably nicer than most things I could buy new. The one exception is anything upholstered, because that's going to have to be bought new because of the allergies (the futon mattress and bed mattress were fine because I knew where it was from and knew there were no pets, etc. The bed mattress was brand new, besides).
Mmmm, they're talking about bamboo bedding. Sooooo soft. I have a set of pillowcases I got on sale.
